As another fall term has arrived, the Senior Boys in Brentwood’s soccer program have been eager to get started. It has now been about a year and a half since the coronavirus pandemic began affecting high school sports around North America. September is finally providing the opportunity for competition between schools once again.

The first few training sessions were used as a tryout to see who had what it takes to play and train with Brentwood’s Varsity soccer team. As it turned out, practically everyone who tried out impressed the coaches and will, at the very least, remain in training with the Seniors.

The competitiveness in the practices after tryouts has been nothing short of spectacular. Every time the boys step on the pitch, the energy levels are through the roof. Head Coach Mr Barrett says “All the boys are committed to their growth and development as young players and everyone successfully used the references in the games that we have been using during the last two weeks of training.”

Brentwood’s Senior Boys kicked off their season this past Tuesday against our rivals SMUS from Victoria. The result for us was just about as good as it could have been: a 2-0 win with goals from Sebastian M, Privett ‘22 and Fabian H, Whittall ‘22 will, hopefully, set the tone for a very successful season.

The team’s goalkeeper Dylan G, Whittall ‘23 says that “This team has so much talent and potential it’s actually incredible. Every time I step on the field, I feel very confident with the group defending our net no matter who we are playing.”

The boys also took part in ISAs this weekend which served as a great chance to better our team chemistry and get some more wins. With 2-0 and 2-1 wins on day 1 the team was trending very nicely heading into the final day. A couple more wins later and the Senior Boys had successfully defended the Independent Schools Championship! “The boys did a fantastic job this weekend playing and winning all four games” remarked Mr Barrett.

For a team with our potential and enthusiasm, it will be really interesting to see just how far we can go over the course of this action-packed season.
