Senior Girls Rugby: success at the local McGeachie tournament.

11 March 2008
Jim Burrows
This past weekend, the girls rugby team played in the McGeachie tournament run by Cowichan RFC. On Friday, they played 3 short games, beating Ladysmith 10-5, tying Vanier 0-0 (despite Rona's superb run in the dying seconds), and losing to Semiahmoo 0-10. The latter team placed second in the AAA provincial championships last year and had three BC rep players in their starting line-up. We were very proud of the way our girls responded to the increased challenge of each game. Having placed second in our pool, we faced Shawnigan Lake School on Saturday morning. In the first half, both teams played very aggressively with the Shawnigan forwards winning most of the ruck balls. Our tackling, however, was outstanding and the score at halftime was 5-3 for Shawnigan. In the second half, both sides substituted liberally and our forwards began to exert more control. Our running game started flowing properly, moving the ball wide and sending Ginny and Nellie off on scoring runs. Later, Alison, Rona and Lenutsa scored from close in after turn-overs caused by strong tackling. The final score of 32-5 rather flattered us, but it capped off a weekend of considerable growth. Our first league game is in Ladysmith this week.
