This past weekend the Senior Girls Basketball team played in the South Island Tournament at St. Margaret’s in Victoria involving the top AA teams from the South and Mid-Island leagues. BCS faced Parkland Secondary in their first game and although the team got off to a slow start, they picked up their intensity and competitiveness as they game went on and won in convincing style 67-49. Top scorers of the game were Captain Madlen A with 19 points followed by Ailish T and Emily H with 18 and 14 points respectively.

The second game was against provincially ranked SMUS. We knew that this would be a tough game but stepped up to the challenge and played our best game of the season. Although the girls battled hard all game, they came up a little short and lost 47-40. The top scorer was Ailish T with 11 points. The third game of the tournament was against Pacific Christian who moved the ball quickly and played tough defense. The score was close all game but in the fourth quarter BCS turned it up a few notches and managed to pull away, winning 57-48. Top scorer of the game was Ailish T with 19 followed by Madlen A with 16. This win advanced the team to the 3rd place game and secured us a berth the Island Championships.

In our final game of the tournament we faced SLS, a team we had previously played three times. Unfortunately the girls did not have their best game and trailed for the majority of the game. The girls, however, worked hard to get back in it and shot three 3-pointers in a row to finish the game and to send it into overtime. Unfortunately, we were in foul trouble heading into OT and the near perfect foul shooting of the SLS players in the bonus situation was too much to overcome: we eventually lost 61-56. Special thanks to the Junior players who came up to play: Carolyn B, Jessica L and Tajzha D.

The coaches also congratulate the team on a well-played tournament and for handling the adversity they faced with poise and determination. Up next is the Island Tournament this weekend at Wellington where the girls will face the #1 ranked home team in their opening game.
