The Senior Girls Basketball team always puts on their game faces as we greet our competition; this was especially the case as we faced off against our local rivals, Shawnigan Lake School last Tuesday.

Due to Covid restrictions, no spectators were allowed to watch the game, but the whole team, especially the bench, contributed greatly to the success over the course of the game. The team was also excited to welcome junior Peyton H, Hope ‘24 to show off her skills at the senior level.

It is not uncommon, but very exciting to have the Juniors join our games to continue the future of the Brentwood Girls Basketball program. Impressively, sometimes the Juniors play two games back to back competing for both the Junior and Senior teams. Peyton remarks that she “likes playing with the senior team because it’s a fun group of people, and it’s exciting to play with experienced and competitive team members.”

The game featured strong play from the starting five -  Miranda NP, Jensa NG, Ona GP, Sylvie E and Kiara J - and the highlight of a career high 25 points from Jensa who hit six times from the three point line, as well as on the dribble and at the charity stripe. Strong minutes off the bench came from Sophie B, Sophie H, Beluchi O, Sasha H and Peyton who brought the team to the final buzzer with a convincing 67-50 win. Miranda scored 17, Ona 10, Sylvia 6, Kiara & Sophie B 4 each and Beluchi added her energy around the rim as well.

Starter Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 mentioned that she “thought the team did a great job battling until the end. No one panicked when the score got close and we kept focusing on our own game, improving every quarter.”

Each game, win or lose, is a great learning experience for the team as we continue on into the heart of the season with important games on the line. The game is available here
Our next game is Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6:30pm against Ladysmith in the opening round of the North Island playoffs.
