Senior Girls Basketball: We’re Back!

Thursday, January 20, 2022 - By: Miranda NP, Alex ‘23

As the Brentwood campus begins to bustle with new-year-new-me energy from students returning from break, a bright 2022 seems to be in store for Brentonians. As the countdown to warmer weather begins, a much anticipated event surrounds us.
That’s right, basketball enthusiasts and DG fans, basketball season is finally here.
In December we saw our Junior A Girls & Boys, as well as our Senior Boys kick off their season with home openers against Gulf Islands. Our Senior Girls, however, were greatly impacted by volleyball provincials and it wasn’t until Tuesday, January 11th that the team was able to practice with a full roster.
Coming fresh out of a relaxing winter break, these eminent athletes are motivated for a spectacular season. Our tight-knit group has been playing together since Jocelyn L, Mack ‘22 and Sophie B, Mack ‘22 were in Grade 9. Now, those 9s are seniors and the leaders in our group. The seasoned veterans saw no competitive play in their ‘20-’21 season but continued to sharpen their skills in preparation for a strong Senior debut.
September brought many new faces to join our program, each of which will be a key player in the success of the team. New additions include Ona GP, Mack ‘23 Sasha H, Allard ‘23 and Beluchi O Mack ‘23. These girls have already expressed their motivation in being the first Brentwood Senior girls team to qualify for Provincials in a long time: “Positive team culture, accountability and working harder than the competition is what will help us reach our goal” admitted Sasha.
After only three practices, we traveled to Comox where we played AAA Isfeld. From tip-off to the last whistle, the team battled through adversity and demonstrated mental toughness as we played past some tough calls. In the end, we came up short, losing by one point, 55-54. We then stayed overnight in Comox, before motoring down to Nanaimo for our next match against Quad A NDSS. This game showcased some very strong performances by Ona and Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 - they scored 16 points each. After a tough loss the previous evening, the girls fought for their first victory of the season and returned home with a 20 point win!
Assistant Coach Ms Anderson explains that the “focus right now is learning about each player's strengths and helping them make those connections on the court.” A building is only as strong as its foundation, so making sure girls who are new to the sport gain confidence will be crucial to the team’s success. “It's exciting to watch the group come together and build one of Brentwood's most competitive Senior Girls teams yet”.

Our next game is Friday, January 21st at 5:00 at Claremont Secondary School in Saanich. Our next home game is Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 vs Oak Bay. Come on out and watch the girls at work!
