Senior Boys Win Victoria City Police Tournament Title!

18 January 2010
Over the weekend, the Senior Boys continued their impressive run by going 4-0 and capturing the prestigious 16 team Victoria Police Tournament Title.  The tournament had a number of AAA teams but its strength lay in the five provincially-ranked AA competitors (including #1 ranked Southern Okanagan Hornets).  In the first round Brentwood faced a feisty Windsor team.  After taking a 22 point lead midway through the third quarter, the boys lost their composure a bit and were uncharacteristically rattled but nonetheless hung on for a 69-60 victory.  The second game was played in a terrific atmosphere as Brentwood faced St Michael’s University School in their home gym in front of a packed house.  Behind an impressive array of 3pt shooting, Brentwood raced out to a 21 point lead early in the second quarter but seemed to fall in love with the long range shot and allowed the talented and aggressive SMUS team to claw their way back into the game mid-way through the fourth.  A couple of huge defensive stops in the last two-minutes gave Brentwood the breathing room it needed to come away with a 78-70 victory.  In the semi-final game, Brentwood faced G.W. Graham whose impressive frontcourt tandem had combined for 54 points the previous night in their upset of South Okanagan.  Mat H played outstanding defense against their top scorer and once again, Brentwood appeared to be comfortably ahead heading into the fourth quarter.  Unfortunately, Brentwood had their worst ten minutes of the year, missing ten free throws, a number of barely contested lay-ups and demonstrated poor decision making on the defensive end.  Still, they did not quite break as they came up with a couple of key stops and Jason M controlled the defensive backboards allowing Brentwood to escape with a 60-57 win.  In the final, Brentwood faced an athletic team from Belmont S.S.  After a closely contested first half, Brentwood surged ahead in the third quarter and continued to assert their dominance in the fourth as they ran away with a 69-52 victory. Brentwood’s play off the bench was strong all weekend and Ben H’s 12 rebounds and season high 8 blocks in the final were a big boost for the team.  Brentwood is off to G.I.S.S. for a league game on Thursday and then host their annual “Countdown to Playoffs” Tournament on Jan 28-30.  Congrats to the boys on back-to-back weekends of exceptional play!
