Senior Boys Win First Round

Brentwood's senior boys basketball team topped the Esquimalt Dockers for the third time this season in the first round of the Island AA High School Basketball Championships on Thursday. Scoring was spread evenly throughout the team, but it was the team's vice-like defence that proved to be the difference. Down by two at the end of the first quarter, any early game jitters evaporated and the team settled down and put the clamps on Esquimalt's top three players, leading to several turnovers and a seven-point lead by halftime. The effort by the team in the third quarter proved to be the eventual difference. Outstanding team pressure when Esquimalt had the ball led by Seb Kohlmetz, Jason Kim and Matt Haines, stifled the Dockers players and limited their scoring in the period to only three points. Add to this Matt Lee's two three-pointers and Andre Coquillard's veteran leadership, and the Brentwood team was able to put the game out of reach. Perhaps most satisfying in this win was the play of the entire bench, who relieved the starters for the final six minutes of the game and played solid team basketball. The squad meets the Cedar Spartans today (Friday) at 5:15 p.m. in the Ladysmith High School gym for their second and critically important game in the tournament.
