Senior Boys Strike ISA Silver

13 December 2012
The Senior Boys Basketball team tipped of their season by hosting the annual Independent School Tournament in the Woodward Sportsplex. Brentwood opened the tournament against a feisty team from West Point Gray. After being down 16-11 at the quarter, some full court pressure resulted in a number of easy hoops for Brentwood and we were able to go into halftime with a 10 point lead which we managed to sustain until the final buzzer.
In the semi-final, Brentwood faced traditional AA powerhouse Southridge Secondary from Surrey. We struggled to execute in the first half and clung to a 6 point lead at the break.  In the second half, the boys moved the ball well and got contributions from a variety of sources as they coasted to a 77-50 victory. This set the stage for a thrilling final vs. cross town rival and the AA #1 provincially ranked SMUS Blue Jags.
In front of a lively home crowd, Brentwood came out with guns blazing and built a 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, but SMUS managed to fight their way back to just a 6 point deficit by half. The third quarter once again belonged to Brentwood as we extended our lead to double digits, but in the fourth, SMUS’s ball pressure took us out of our comfort zone and the team struggled to get any rhythm. SMUS came storming back and took their first lead of the game with just under a minute to go.
With Brentwood down by one point with the ball, Jason T took the ball hard to the basket for what first looked like a basket plus the foul with just 4 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, basketball’s toughest call, the block vs. the charge, went against Brentwood and the basket was disallowed.  SMUS made one of two free throws at the other end to come away with a hard fought 51-49 victory while the Brentwood boys had to settle for silver. Still, the coaching staff was pleased with the improvement shown over the course of the weekend and is excited for the season that lies ahead.  Congrats to all the boys on an excellent tournament.
