The senior soccer boys travelled to SMUS in Victoria to start their 2009 season with the annual Independent School Association soccer tournament. Playing perennially powerful St. Georges in the first game, the team exhibited an excellent work rate, combined with determined tackling, but ultimately lost 2-0. The second game of the day saw a 2-1 win over SMUS with some smart passing and improved linkage from the midfield to the forwards which created a number of scoring opportunities. Goals came from Eric S delivered from a corner taken by Taylor A, and the second tally from Alexander B via a slick through pass from Jeremy L. The third game of the day against St. Johns provided another victory with a 3-0 score line. The team moved the ball around sharply which led to multiple scoring chances. Jeremy L tallied two via a Alexander B cross and a Taylor A pass. The last goal fell to Sang L after receiving a fine pass through from Rohan Y. Finishing 2nd in the pool play qualified the team for the bronze medal game in the second day of the tournament. However, the boys knew they would not have the services of four grade 12 starters who had to attend an academic session. Playing against the tournament host the squad gave a good account of themselves but couldn't quite match the level of play offered by the opposition and were beaten by a better side on the day. Finishing fourth overall, the team showed the makings of a very competitive side. League play has also just begun and the team started brightly with a deserved win over Woodlands at home. Two goals were enough to settle a tightly contested match that was scoreless at the half. A low well stuck shot by Paul H opened the scoring which was quickly followed by a long range effort from the left by Taylor A. The work rate exhibited by Brentwood ultimately made the difference and will be a key factor to a successful season. The team next travels to Saltspring on Thursday October 8th to take on a Gulf Island side that historically is a strong contender for the league title.
