Senior Boys Soccer
Quickness, dynamism, possession, & flair are all words that can be used to describe the playing style of Senior Boys Soccer. When this group were on form, they were extremely hard to play against & very difficult to win the ball from. Some teams like to pass the ball around, others like to play it forward quickly: this team did both of these things well.
We had a very strong season. There are 20 AA senior boys soccer teams on the Island. We are in the Mid Island League, five teams. A team needs to finish in the top three in order to qualify for the North Islands.
But before I describe the AA season, let me mention that the team had some early season success finishing with a Silver medal at the ISAs. We managed to defeat West Point Grey, Collingwood & Glenlyon-Norfolk before falling to AAA St. George’s.
Our boys, undefeated, finished 1st in the Mid Island. This seeded them #1 at North Islands, an eight team tournament where, in order to move on, a team must finish in the top five. The boys finished second, advancing to the Islands. In order to qualify for the BCs in Burnaby a team must finish in the top three. Brentwood finished 3rd after beating GISS 6-1 & entered the BCs for the second straight year & only the second time in the past ten years.
The BCs is a 16 team tournament consisting of four groups of four teams. A team must win its group in order to advance to the semifinals. We had a 2-1 record (6 points) finishing second in the group. This placed the boys into the five to eight section, missing out on the top four.
Though top four at the BCs was a goal of the team this year, the boys got together & won two solid games to finish a Brentwood best 5th place. The tournament also saw some individual accomplishments with Captain Griffin FR, Ellis ‘18 making the Commissioner’s 11 & Bruno C, Whittall ‘18 winning the Golden Boot award for the most goals.
It was a real pleasure working with this talented group.
