Senior Boys Silence the Rams

Every Monday evening, two dedicated groups of boys collide in the sprint down the Belmont gym for a battle of basketball, aiming to outlast the other team. The most recent of these clashes was a 44 minute power struggle between Brentwood and the Mount Douglas Rams. Fast-paced play presented Brentwood with the opportunity to lose their opponents quickly, with every shift bringing a fresh pair of legs ready to run the court every change of possession. Bruno C, Whittall ‘18 characterized Brentwood’s passion, his hand consistently in the passing lane, ready for a loose ball, bad pass, and the opportunity to score a fast-break basket.  Brentwood did a much better job on defence than in the previous game, sprinting back in transition and managing to stop easy baskets after changes of possession. Mount Doug found themselves frustrated when all lanes to the basket were covered, causing them to commit offensive fouls, make easy turnovers and shoot difficult shots. Ferdinand S, Rogers ’17 was a powerhouse of a post player, wreaking havoc with every mismatch and managing to score off offensive rebounds and tip-ins, while also connecting on the majority of his free throws. Brentwood finished the game with a commanding score of 48-36, in time to load back onto the bus and finish dinner before prep started. A larger group of boys practices every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but can be found in the gym much more often than that. Third term basketball focuses on personal skills like ball-handling, shooting, and transition play. The coaches, Mr. Warner, Mr. Gage, and Mr. Sullivan, are focused on helping everyone improve for the next season of basketball, and the players investments of sweat and handwork are rewarded with great skills and succinct team play.
