After defeating 'AA' rivals Ladysmith 48-12 earlier in the week, the Senior Boys rugby program finished the premier season with two big wins over local rivals Shawnigan Lake School last Saturday.
In the curtain raiser match, the Brentwood 2nd XV took on their Shawnigan counterparts and won a hard-fought contest, squeaking out a 6-5 win. Despite the low scoreline, the quality of the game was high, with many passages of excellent play. Once again, Jaemok Lee was a standout performer and was again joined at the front of the charge by Mike Potter and Russell Miller, who recently returned from injury. In the marquee 1st XV game, the much touted 'AAA' Shawnigan team challenged the Brentwood squad, but our lads stood strongly together and defended the Brentwood colours with panache and grit, winning the game 17-13. Led by the author of our two tries captain Sam Silbergeld and fly-half Sean Ferguson, our boys were indefatigable and showed tremendous solidarity in scoring a try in the fading moments to win the game. The close score, however, does not adequately reflect the true nature of the Brentwood performance. Had it not been for one or two handling mistakes and had Nicholas Philippson's apparent try been awarded, the score would have been truly one-sided. Nevertheless, the boys were extremely happy with the win and have now poised themselves for a favourable draw heading into the Provincial Championships. The Brentwood team: Johannes Hoffmeyer, Justin Glazier, Darren Sage, Ben Harris, David MacKay, Sam Silbergeld (Captain), Stan Heunis, Nicholas Philippson, Tate Rose, Sean Ferguson, Geoff Friderichs, Sean McCarthy, Mike Brine,
Mike Shenker, and Andre Coquillard. Replacements: Paul Bosco, Mike Potter, Vytas Semogas.
