On Wednesday, the Brentwood Senior Boys Rugby program returned from the battle of the Island Finals against Saint Michaels before we head to the Provincials. This game determined the seeds for the Provincial Championships putting an immense amount of pressure on the team. Not only that, but we have previously lost twice against SMUS leading up to this game.

The boys returned to campus early from midterm on Monday, a day earlier than the rest of the student body, to practice hours in preparation for this game and the Provincials. We were committed and dedicated to finally defeating our Island rival and putting our team in good standing for our final tournament.

When we got to the UVIC fields, the sun was blasting on the vibrant grass. The temperature was well above 20C and the boys were huffing and puffing running in the sun. As Mr Thompson always claims, β€œIt was a battle of who wants it most.” After a hard-fought victory in our previous game, it was clear that our team had what it took to bring home the Win.

However, things turned sideways very quickly as the opponent kicked off. They outworked & outplayed us in the maul as well as rucks and offensive structure quickly giving them the first try of the game. Soon after, our fullback, Kaelin D, fell to the ground from a hip injury, and things started to crumble bit by bit. Our defensive efforts were not up to standard and we were unable to execute the phases of forward and back plays like we practiced all season.

The final score was 53-7 for SMUS. It was a hard defeat for our boys. However, we still have the chance to prove ourselves in our biggest and most anticipated opportunity of the year, the Provincials. We will need to fight with grit and determination like never before to defeat our opponents in the bracket.

We leave Tuesday for the Provincial Championships at Abbotsford Exhibition Park May 31 to June 3.
