Senior Boys Rugby: Double Win on North Island Swing

25 April 2008

On Tuesday, both the 1st and 2nd XV's travelled north to Vanier High School in Courtenay. Vanier plays in the AAA rugby category and boasts a much larger school population than the AA Brentwood College. The school has traditionally had a very competitive rugby program and the physical nature of the Vanier side (and the two-and-a-half hour road trip) promised to make the rugby game a challenging endeavour. Both of the Brentwood teams were up to the task, however, bringing home wins in both games. Early in the 1st XV match, Brentwood displayed its elusive attacking game based around maintaining continuity and passing before and through the contact areas. Sometimes, however, the boys were guilty of attempting too many risky passes or playing the opportunities presented before having the ball in hand. The result was many dropped balls and too many turn-overs. When the passes did go to hand, the boys and the spectators were able to enjoy a beautifully flowing game that resulted in many long periods of ball movement and three excellent tries. The final score-line was 19-0 for Brentwood and perhaps flattered the dominated Vanier side. Player of the game honours went to Grade 12 Brendan Muehlenberg who ran rampant through the back line as well as making several excellent tackles. In the 2nd XV tilt that followed, the Brentwood side found its mark early in the game and, like the senior squad, was able to put together some beautiful passages of play, dominating the opposition and scoring 4 beautiful tries to win 24-0. Player of the game honours went to Grade 11 and first year Brentwood student Mike Potter who led his team from the front in both attack and defence.
