Senior Boys Off to Provincials!
For the third straight year, the Senior Boys’ basketball team has qualified for the provincial championships, this time by placing 3rd in the Vancouver Island Championship. The team opened the tournament vs. the # 2 seed from the North Island, the Highland Raiders, coached by former Brentwood parent Murray and alumnus Adam Erickson (2001). Brentwood was able to generate some early turnovers and jumped out to a 21 point lead at the half and earned a solid 81-53 win. This placed the boys up against a powerful Lambrick Park team on Friday night.
Brentwood struggled to execute against an aggressive opponent and two quarter-ending three pointers allowed Lambrick to gain an 11 point lead at the half. In the second half, Brentwood seemed out of sorts and clearly lost the battle on the boards and, ultimately, the game. With only three berths coming off of Vancouver Island, the team would have to win its last two games on Saturday in order to qualify. To make things even more interesting, Brentwood's first test would come against local rival Shawnigan Lake. Despite some early foul trouble, Jason M and David L both shot the ball well and allowed us to grab a 9 point lead at the half. Shawnigan came out aggressively in the third quarter and trimmed the deficit to 5 before Brentwood was able to capitalize on the post play of Ben H and finally pull away for a 60-46 win. With the win, Brentwood advanced to the bronze medal game vs. Woodlands of Nanaimo. With a berth to provincials on the line, the team came out all fired up and erupted for 27 points in the first quarter and were able to go into the half leading by 21. The second half was much of the same and an elated Brentwood team closed out the affair with a decisive 87-53 victory and a well deserved berth to the provincial championships in Kamloops, March 8-12.
Congratulations to the team and good luck in Kamloops!
Mr. Blake Gage, Coach
