Senior Boys’ Interhouse Soccer – Privett Rules
The semi-final round match between Ellis and Rogers required a penalty shootout out after Rogers clawed their way back into the game to even the score at 2 near the end of regulation. Ultimately Ellis prevailed to move to the final against Privett.
In the other semi-final, a heated battle between Whittall and Privett saw Whittall create many more chances, but their finishing was poor and many chances were squandered. At times, the soccer was “agricultural” – more vigour than finesse. With the score tied 0-0, and penalty kicks looming with little time left, Privett got their one chance, as Alex P scored from close range. Privett 1, Whittall 0.
In the consolation final, Whittall seemed to have the edge and they got an early lead, but Rogers managed to tie the game and send it into penalty kicks. It was here that the mathematical ability of the Rogers boys was brought into question. On three separate occasions, the Rogers boys dashed forward in celebration of winning the shoot-out. But they had not won; the shoot-out was not finished. On the sixth penalty, however, with the score tied 3-3, Tom M stepped up to score for Rogers, giving them the bronze medal finish they had already celebrated three times.
The final was dominated by Privett, but Ellis took a never-say-die approach that kept them in the match right until the end. Privett took the title for the 4th year in a row (says Mr. Healy) with a slim 2-1 victory as Adam M tallied twice.
