Senior Boys Have No Regrets

8 January 2022

On Wednesday, December 8th seven members of the Senior Boys Basketball team hopped on a bus to North Vancouver to compete in British Columbia’s annual No Regrets Tournament where some of the toughest BC teams come to play.

In the first game Brentwood was short-staffed. Seven of us faced Collingwood’s equivalent of a Brentwood Showcase - their gymnasium was packed. The air was thick with trash talk and intensity. Prior to the game Coach Gage told us “This game comes down to who wants it more. It’s all in here” pointing at his heart. The team battled like never before. Since we were so short handed, we were all forced to play significantly more than usual, pushing our bodies to the limit. Both teams fought with intensity but Collingwood’s shooters were just having too good a game. We lost by six - but this was the only L the boys would be taking.

The following day, reinforcements arrived in the form of Captain Cannon F, Rogers ‘22, Avik B, Privett ‘23, Jayden L, Ellis ‘23 and team manager Lucas K, Whittall ‘22. Having four more members made a drastic difference. We played West Vancouver’s Rockridge Secondary taking home a big 86-59 victory. All of us pushed physically and mentally, but one player stood out: Dylan G, Whitall ‘23. He had a phenomenal game scoring 27 points and racking up four assists along the way. When I asked him how he had such a great weekend, he responded: “Honestly I was just there mentally. I shot what I needed to shoot and had great teammates on and off the court supporting me. You could say I was dialed.”

The team finished the weekend playing Dover Bay at Handsworth Secondary beating them 88-58 with Milan P, Privett ‘24 as player of the game.

This is just the start of the boys’ season and it's only going to get better. None of this would have been possible without Head Coach Mr Gage and Assistant Coach Mr Sullivan. They’ve shaped us into better players over the past four months and have pushed our bodies to the limit so we are physically ready for the season. All thanks to them.

The Senior boys are looking forward to an action-packed season when we return in January.
