Senior Boys Finish Impressive Season

19 March 2012
The Senior Boys Basketball team ended their season over the spring break as they made another impressive run at the provincial basketball championship and finished 4th overall in British Columbia. The team entered the tournament as the 5th seed and faced a tough home town Sahali team in the opening round.  After a week and a half of excellent practice, the boys were clearly ready for anything Sahali had to throw at them. We played well at both ends of the court, took the home crowd out of the game early, and roared to a 72-40 victory. The win set up a game with highly-touted #4 ranked King George in the quarter finals.

Brentwood did not look sharp to start the game as we settled for contested threes early and often at the offensive end and lost track of King George shooters defensively. It was only towards the end of the half that the team started to lock down on defense and make things difficult for KG; we crawled into the break trailing 30-18.  The second half, however, proved to be a completely different story.  Brentwood came out aggressively at the defensive end and generated some turnovers for easy baskets. Offensively we started to pick apart the King George zone getting great looks from all over the court. By the end of the 3rd, Brentwood had stormed back to tie the game and kept our momentum going in the 4th where we took a 5 point lead with just under 4 minutes to play.  King George switched to man-to-man and the BCS boys finished them off with an impressive display of offense resulting in a number of uncontested lay-ups.  The final score was 53-46 for Brentwood which earned us a berth in the semi-finals against the # 1 seed Mission.

The start of the semi-final game was disturbingly similar to other opening quarters with Brentwood’s offense looking abysmal as we settled for four consecutive contested threes to start the game. Fortunately, Mission missed a few easy opportunities and while we were down 16-5 early, the score actually could have been far worse.  After a time out, the boys came out focused and played some inspired basketball for the rest of the half going inside out against the Mission zone and doing a terrific job on the defensive end. With a last-second short corner jumper by David L the team actually went into the break with a 27-21 advantage!  The third quarter started much the way the second half ended with Brentwood extending its lead to 10 points four minutes in. Unfortunately, that was when the wheels fell off.  Mission ramped up their game and showed why they were the #1 seed while Brentwood clearly became rattled, did not move the ball well, and despite a number of excellent scoring opportunities, simply could not put the ball in the basket. Mission, on the other hand, had some unlikely heroes step in off their bench and knock down a barrage of three pointers as they roared back and took a six point lead late in the 4th.  After some desperation fouls, Mission defeated Brentwood 53-43 (and eventually went on to win the tournament).

The bronze medal game was not Brentwood’s best performance and while the team played hard, turnovers ultimately told the story as Brentwood eventually went down to a tough team from GW Graham. Nonetheless, the 4th place finish was a phenomenal achievement for a young team that returned only one starter from the previous year.  Jordan C was named to the tournament all-star team and Jon C played terrific basketball throughout the tournament.  The senior leadership of Jon C, David L, Alex P, Martin B, Dr. Anthony S and Captain Chris W was certainly a key factor in the team’s success and also a big reason for the team’s second consecutive award as the Most Sportsmanlike Team at the provincial tournament!  The coaching staff is immensely proud of them.

Mr. Blake Gage, Coach
