Last week, the Senior Boys basketball team headed off to Kamloops to participate in the 16 team AA Provincial Basketball Tournament. On Wednesday, they opened against a large and talented team from Columneetza Secondary, a game many expected to be the toughest match up of the first round. Despite some impressive shooting from Columneetza, Brentwood managed to generate a number of turnovers that resulted in easy transition hoops and ultimately forged ahead for an impressive 88-78 victory. James L and Matt L were terrific at the offensive end. Matt scored 25 pts while James chipped in 23 pts but also grabbed 7 steals and handed out 7 assists. Ben H also had a very strong game off the bench with 21 pts and 14 rebounds and Mat H once again did a terrific job on the defensive end guarding Columneetza’s 6’7 superstar and holding him to his lowest point total of the tournament. In the second game, Brentwood faced G.W. Graham for a berth in the semi-finals.  Brentwood played outstanding defense the entire game but for the first time all year, simply could not score the ball. The boys shot a dismal 11% from the field in the second half, and 34% from the foul line and came away with a disappointing loss. In the final game of the tournament, the boys bounced back with an impressive performance against Prince Rupert. Ironically, the team shot the ball well with Matt L leading the way once again with 27 pts. James L also had a strong game with 10 pts and 11 assists but it was the production off the bench of senior players Aron S and Chris S that was truly inspiring and helped propel the team to a 88-58 win. Despite the frustrating loss in the quarter finals, the boys were the top Island team at the tournament and captured 8th place in the province. It was the end of a truly remarkable season. After losing all five starters from the previous year, the team worked unbelievably hard together and had the most successful season in Brentwood’s basketball history. They won two major tournaments (Spartan-Ram Classic and Victoria City Police Tourney), were Mid-Island and South Island Champs, and also won their first ever Vancouver Island Championship. The boys entered the Provincial tournament with an impressive record of 24-4 and went 19-1 after the Christmas holidays. The team is especially grateful for the outstanding leadership provided by seniors James L, Mat H, Chris S, Aron S, and Matt L. Mr Gage and the boys would like to personally thank Mr. Felix for all the time and hard work he put in with the team and managing the head coach. Congrats to the entire team on a fantastic year!
