Senior Boys Capture South Island Basketball Title

21 February 2012

Over the weekend the Brentwood boys held off a feisty #6 ranked team from SMUS to win 57-56 and capture the South Island Basketball Championship. To reach the final, Brentwood managed to secure a comfortable win over Esquimalt in the opening round then battled back from a 5 point half-time deficit to defeat Lambrick Park 63-48 in the semi-final.

In the final, Brentwood jumped out to an early lead but every time we looked to pull away SMUS came storming back. A late 3 pointer by Shalev S gave Brentwood a 6 point cushion with roughly a minute remaining but after SMUS countered with a 3 of their own and a put back on the offensive glass, Brentwood had to take care of the ball in the dying seconds to come away with a hard-fought 1 point win.

While it was certainly a successful weekend for the boys, their complete focus now rests on the Island Championship commencing Thursday, Feb 23 at SMUS in Victoria. They will need to finish in the top three of a highly competitive tournament in order to qualify for the provincial championship in Kamloops (March 7-10). Read the article in Times Colonist here.

Good luck to the boys!
