Senior Boys Capture Silver at “Countdown to the Playoffs” Tournament

This past weekend Brentwood co-hosted their highly regarded 16 team “Countdown to the Playoffs” tournament with Shawnigan Lake School, an event started over twenty years ago by current Director of Admissions, Clayton Johnston.  It was a very competitive tournament that included eight provincially ranked AA teams in addition to a couple very strong AAA teams.  For the Brentwood side, this was their first opportunity to play in front of their home fans and they did not disappoint.
In the opening round game, Brentwood had an important victory over GISS as it also doubled as a league game. The team leaped out to a 17-4 first quarter lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 64-45 win. In the second round, Brentwood was up against a gritty Belmont (AAA) squad in a game that did not start well. Trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, Brentwood finally started to lock down on defense and crawled back into the game pulling within 1 on a huge Shalev S three pointer with a minute to go. After getting a big stop, on their subsequent possession, great effort on the offensive glass by Jon C gave Brentwood an extra opportunity and Jordan C was the beneficiary as he knocked in a short baseline jumper to go ahead. While the boys looked fatigue, a loud and very supportive Brentwood crowd clearly gave them the extra boost they need to come up with a couple of big defensive stops and some clutch foul shooting as the team held on for a 68-66 win.
The result set up a semi-final game with #2 provincially ranked GW Graham who was coming off an impressive 40 point lambasting of Lambrick Park. The Brentwood team was not fazed however, and thanks to a big first half from David L and Martin B, they withstood a barrage of Graham 3 pointers and only trailed by 1 at the half. Things did not look good early in the third as David L went down with an injury and was unable to return. Fortunately, Alex P stepped into the breach and came up with an inspired defensive effort. Jon C was also excellent on the defensive end while Jordan, Shalev and Jason T came up with big buckets on offense. It was a terrific back-and-forth affair with both teams trading leads and at the end of regulation the game was a complete deadlock at 79-79.  In overtime, our team executed extremely well, scored the first seven points and managed to finish with an impressive 94-85 victory. Once again, the atmosphere in the Brentwood Sportsplex was inspiring as the crowd clearly provided the Brentwood team with the extra spark they needed.
In the final, an exhausted and short-handed Brentwood team came up against highly touted AAA power Mount Douglas. Unfortunately, Mount Doug was simply too good on the day and never gave Brentwood a sniff as they rolled to victory. Despite it being a lopsided affair, the Brentwood boys fought and scrapped right to the end and our fans were again fantastic right to the finish. All in all, the silver medal was a terrific accomplishment for the team, however, now the real work begins as the boys gear up for their last two league games and get ready for the playoffs. Their last home game of the year will be on Wednesday Feb 8th at 7:30pm vs. arch rivals Shawnigan Lake. Come cheer on the boys!
