Senior Boys Capture Bronze at Spartan Invitational

22 January 2013
Last weekend, the Senior Boys Basketball team competed in their first tournament of the New Year and despite showing a little rust from the layoff, managed to come away with a bronze medal. In the opening game the team faced a feisty veteran team from Spectrum in Victoria. After a tight first half, the boys pulled away in the second and had a 20pt lead with roughly 6 minutes to go. To Spectrum’s credit, they never stopped fighting and managed to narrow the gap to single digits in the last minute of the game. Still, the boys came away with a good win and advanced to the semis where they faced arch-rival Lambrick Park.

Brentwood came out of the gates well thanks to some hot shooting but had trouble containing Lambrick’s impressive 6’9 post. BCS clung to a narrow one point lead at the half. Lambrick slowly edged ahead in the second and the Brentwood team looked slow and tired at both ends of the floor. With a barrage of fourth quarter threes (5 in a 4 minute span), Lambrick put Brentwood away 77-69.

With the loss, Brentwood faced Comox’s GP Vanier. Brentwood started the game looking exactly like a team that had taken a month off basketball: lazy cuts, poor defensive rotations and abysmal shooting as Vanier jumped out to a 15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Things did not go much better in the second and the boys found themselves down 8 at the half. In the second half, despite significant fatigue, the team showed some real determination and played their best basketball of the weekend. They still struggled to convert on some easy opportunities but they put the clamps on the Vanier offense and held them to 11 points in the half. Brentwood grabbed their first lead late in the 3rd quarter and extended it to a 20 point margin midway through the fourth before settling for a 54-41 win and a well-earned third place finish.

The team now embarks on their busiest stretch of the year with a 3 day tournament at Pitt Meadows followed by their annual Showcase Game vs. Shawnigan Lake School today, Jan 22nd at 7:45pm in the Woodward Sportsplex.
