The senior boys basketball team accomplished an historic feat on Saturday evening at St. Michael's University School by defeating SMUS 62-46 to capture their first ever AA Island basketball championship. The boys went into the tournament with the #1 seed and managed to dispatch Woodlands in their opening game with a 74-32 win. Mat H (13pts), Ben H (12pts), and Chris S (9pts) led the way in a balanced scoring effort for Brentwood. In the semi-final, Brentwood faced a very tough Shawnigan team for the third time this season. It was a game of massive momentum swings and after jumping out to an early 15pt lead, Brentwood found themselves trailing by 3pts midway through the third quarter. Victor A's efforts on the defensive end, and a series of put backs by Ben H helped spark a 19-0 run for Brentwood which allowed them to eventually secure a 66-52 victory. Brentwood swept all three games against Shawnigan this year. In the final game, in front of a noisy St. Michaels crowd, Brentwood jumped out to an early lead. Both teams struggled to convert on the offensive end as they went into halftime with a 22-16 Brentwood advantage. In the second half, the defensive efforts of Mat H caused the SMUS guards fits and Matt L (27pts) and James L (19pts) took over on the offensive end to help propel Brentwood to a 62-46 win. With the win, the boys qualify as the top seed off the Island for the Provincial Championship held in Kamloops on February 24-27. Congratulations to the boys on a terrific accomplishment and good luck to the team in Kamloops! Link to Times Colonist news article:
