Last weekend, while the rest of the school was enjoying its last few sleepins of the Winter Break, the Senior Boys Basketball team was making its way back to campus early, preparing to get right back into action as their season took speed. The final Sunday of their Christmas holiday the boys spent in the gym, getting shots up, and running lines, readying themselves for their upcoming tournament at Claremont Secondary.

On Thursday, the team made their way down to Victoria for their opener against Notre Dame. The boys played not their best basketball, but hoops that looked more like the product of the ‘18-’19, LeBronless Cleveland Cavaliers. Among the few highlights from the Notre Dame game was a ferocious breakaway throwdown from Justin “Big Ticket” W, Whittall ‘20. Despite an underwhelming performance from the squad, Brentwood got the job done coming away with a 69-58 win.

Friday began with an earlier departure from school - which we student-athletes were very unhappy about - to face another Vancouver team, the Seycove Seahawks. The boys started slowly, once again, but picked up the pace coming into the second quarter. Junior callups Dylan G, Whittall ‘23 and Nathan O, Privett ‘22 brought the drip in the second half, hitting five threes between the two of them. Lorenzo G, Whittall ‘21 also helped ice the game down the stretch, shooting 100% from the freethrow line.

“La Grande Finale” on Saturday night - in front of a substantial crowd - had Brentwood facing off against South Island rivals Lambrick Park Secondary - the only other AA Vancouver Island school that is ranked in the province’s top 10, with Lambrick Park sitting in 4th place in the province, and Brentwood at 8th. From the opening tip, the game never failed to disappoint. Another stellar performance from Matthias S, Ellis ‘20 boosted Brentwood late into the 4th quarter, upping the defensive intensity, and the offensive swagger. Matthias was also named to to tournament All Star team. Despite the defensive ferocity, Brentwood struggled to capitalize at the rim, and from the freethrow line down the stretch - perhaps we should have brought icy-veined Lorenzo into the game for his prowess at the line in the dying seconds. ;-)  The team came up one point short, in a heartbreaking 57-58 loss. “We didn’t finish and score the ball well,” reckoned Captain Juan NP, Whittall ‘20. “When our shots start falling, and we continue to bring intensity on both ends of the floor, I think we will beat a lot of really good teams.”

Fair play to Lambrick as they won it this time, and our team looks forward to seeing them later on in the season. In the meantime, the boys prepare for The Victoria Police Tournament at St Michaels this Thursday to Saturday. Best of luck to the team.
