Brentwood's Senior Boys basketball team, less four starting players and three substitutes due to mid-year exams, travelled to West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver to compete in the B.C. Independent Schools Basketball Championships last weekend. On Friday afternoon, Brentwood met St. John's Catholic School in their first round game, winning easily.  Their next game, on Saturday morning at 8 am, pitted Brentwood against a talented Collingwood School team. With only seven players available, Brentwood had to play intelligent basketball at both ends of the floor. The players did just that, executing effectively at the offensive end of the court and playing tenacious defence, while avoiding foul troubles. Brentwood emerged the winners by fourteen points, which put the team in the finals. Shawnigan, expected to compete at this event, were beaten by a young St. Michaels University School squad in their first round match. Saint George's School sent their JV squad to the event and were quickly dispatched on the first day.
Brentwood met West Point Grey Academy in the championship game. Head Coach Blake Gage had to rely on every player at different times during the contest, and each player made a valuable contribution to the final outcome. Gene Lai played superb defence on several occasions in order to give tournament MVP Johannes Hoffmeyer a much needed rest and Ian Perry and Garrett Clyne provided clutch outside shooting. Jason Kim was the team's most effective defender throughout the tournament and Andre Coquillard's post play was his best effort so far this season. Ray Kim's leadership and handling skills were outstanding, something the team has come to expect from this veteran playmaker.
The end result was a first ever B.C. Independent Schools Basketball Championship for Brentwood. The seven players who represented the school should be proud of this significant achievement. Next up for the squad is the "Countdown to the Playoffs Tournament", hosted by Brentwood. Play starts on Friday, with the final tip-off at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. Brentwood's goal is to be in this game!
