Senior Boys Basketball: Brentwood wins South Island Tournament

For the first time in Brentwood's history, the Senior Boys team won the South Island Championships, defeating Reynolds High School, #3-ranked Esquimalt High School, and  — on Saturday — the #7-ranked perennial powerhouse Lambrick Park High School. The 25-point win against Lambrick Park was impressive, and ended a twelve-game winning streak by the Gordon Head school. The win also proved that Brentwood can play three important games in a row and sustain the focus and commitment required to be competitive in the highly demanding "AA" ranks. The greater challenge, however, still remains. Brentwood will host the Island Championships this week, meeting Cedar High School on Thursday (5:30 pm tip-off) in a must-win game. If successful, Brentwood will meet either Equimalt High School or Woodlands High School on Friday. Clearly, the players need to concentrate on defeating a talented Cedar team and will prepare carefully on the practice floor this week. Although the success last weekend was a true team effort (every player made a contribution against Lambrick Park), Ray Kim, Dave Mackay and Jason Kim provided superb play throughout the weekend. Indeed, Jason Kim's defensive effort was particularly impressive. Sam Silbergeld's calm presence and outstanding court leadership continues to be the epoxy that binds the squad together.
