Senior Boys Basketball: Brentwood wins a thiller over Lambrick Park

18 January 2008

The shot left Dave Mackay's hands with less than a second on the clock and hit nothing but net, propelling Brentwood's Senior Boys basketball team to a thrilling two-point victory over traditional powerhouse Lambrick Park High School during the Victoria Police Tournament. This may well be the first time Brentwood has beaten Lambrick Park, and certainly the first time in the last eight years. The closest, perhaps, was three years ago at the South Island Championships, but Lambrick prevailed in a three-point win. Mackay was not the only player providing clutch shooting — Ray Kim hit a three-point shot with 28 seconds remaining to put Brentwood up by three, only to see the Lambrick point guard hit an equally impressive three-pointer, tying the game with 3.8 seconds left on the clock. Coach Blake Gage immediately called a time-out and mapped out an inbounds play, using several players as decoys. Spreading the court and isolating Mackay at the top of the key, the ball was fed to him. A quick jab step wrong-footed the defender and Mackay shot a picture perfect jumper to win the game. The win shows a growing maturity in the squad, who played an earlier game in the day. Lambrick was well rested, have enjoyed a bye in the first round. Keep an eye on this site for more results.
