Senior Boys Basketball
Coming off an AA Provincial Championship in March 2017 and retaining most of our championship roster, expectations were high for the 2017-2018 season. Our start in the fall was the usual struggle as team members were parts of other competitive teams and gym time was difficult to come by during the volleyball season. When we were in the gym, it was clear we were not in good enough shape, which made working on sets challenging. As first term progressed, we got better and fitter in our limited time, garnering convincing wins over AAAA opponents, winning the Kodiak Klassic, and beating the #1-ranked AAAA Oak Bay Bays at the UVic Senior Boys Invitational Tournament to come away with a first place finish.
The beginning of 2018 was rough too. Though we won the Claremont Spartan Tournament and our Brentwood Classic, we did not perform as well as we would have hoped at key games in the Abby Snowball Classic and the Vancouver College Emerald Tournament due to physical maladies and some complacency. We used these losses, however, to reignite our fire for the game, going undefeated at North Islands and Islands.
For the fourth year in a row for some of us, we were back at our “home court”, the Langley Events Centre. At the Provincial Championships, the boys were simply dominant. The team outplayed and outworked every opponent, ultimately repeating as AA Provincial Champions, beating a talented King George Dragons roster in the final game.
Though we achieved great success over the past four years, I am most proud to have done so with such a talented, gritty, and great group of guys. I will forever cherish the moments we shared together in the bus, hotel, or games. Thank you for going on this journey with me, from being the worst player in Grade 9 to serving as your Captain. Last but not least, I would like to thank Mr Gage, Mr Sullivan, Richie, Laurel, and everyone who contributed to such a great season. Family on three!
