The Senior Boys Basketball team hosted their annual Countdown to Playoffs Tournament this past weekend. It was a 16 team event featuring some of the top AA teams from across the province.   The boys opened against a pesky Belmont squad who had beaten Brentwood in preseason play this year. It was a different story this time as Brentwood’s defensive pressure caused Belmont problems and BCS cruised to an 83-51 victory.   In the second round the team came up against the #1 seed in the tournament, the Mark Isfeld Ice. The coaching staff was pleased with the way the team executed, but we struggled to put the ball in the hoop while Isfeld showed why they are such a highly rated team as they knocked in 14 three pointers enroute to a 68-52 victory over the Brentwood squad.   In the last game of the tournament, Brentwood faced a very strong and athletic team from Wellington SS. Our squad was very short-handed due to sickness and injuries and with early foul trouble, things did not look good for Brentwood. The boys, however, dug deep, and every player on the team stepped up to make big plays.  In particular, Breno C’s gutsy defensive effort was a major spark for a team that was clearly fatigued down the stretch. Somehow, Brentwood entered the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead and we managed to hang on for a great 74-71 victory.   Next up for Brentwood are two league games (vs GISS and SLS) followed by the North Island playoffs. The team is definitely improving and if the boys can be healthy at the right time, they hope to make deep post-season run. Mr Blake Gage, Coach
