The Senior Boys Basketball team participated in the 16 team Welcome Back Tournament at Cowichan High School this past weekend and had a very strong showing. In the opening round the boys surprised a short-handed Oak Bay team 78-65.  Matt L (24 pts) and James L (15 pts) led the way offensively but it was the defensive efforts of Aron S and Victor A that helped stem the Oak Bay offence as they both did a terrific job on their provincial team point guard. Ben H also had a very strong game off the bench scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 rebounds and Jason M showed great energy at both ends and contributed 10pts. In the second game the boys played a gritty team from Belmont. Brentwood was down 12-0 to start the game but showed a great deal of character and battled back to win 71-59.  Matt L and James L once again led the way offensively scoring 32pts and 17pts respectively.  Mat H also had a strong game (11pts) but it was Raffy G who came up big in the clutch scoring 7 unanswered points in the 4th quarter and clinching the game for BCS.  After a tough loss against Cowichan in the semi-final, Brentwood lost its last game of the tourney to Brookswood 70-59.  Battling significant fatigue, the team fought hard against a tough AAA provincially ranked opponent. In this game, Mat H was the most impressive starter on the floor scoring 12pts while dishing out 6 assists. While the other starters struggled, the bench stepped up huge as Matt H, Victor A and Aron S helped stage a 4th quarter comeback that Brookswood finally fought off in the dying minutes of the game. Despite the loss, Brentwood captured 4th in a very strong tournament field including 4 provincially ranked AAA teams.  The boys will return for training camp on Jan 2nd.
