Senior Acting: "The Crucible"

15 April 2008
Susan Quinton
Yesterday evening was the dress rehearsal of the Senior Acting production of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible". The director, Mrs.Susan Quinton, chose this dramatic American classic to give her students the opportunity to work on an award winning script and to challenge their acting talents. The play is set during the witch trials of 1692, where hundreds of women were accused and 19 were eventually hanged after being convicted of practising witchcraft. Sally Smith designed and constructed the period costumes and the students are very excited and ready to wear them tonight, for their first audience. The dramatic stage lighting by Mr. Don Armitage, slide projections of the witch trials, and Salvador Dali religious paintings on a set made from real logs, give this production an unique appearance.
The cast and crew have been working every afternoon and evening since Spring Break putting the finishing touches on the show, and they are ready to present this powerful play. Grade 11 Sloan Dickey plays the tragic hero, John Proctor, who stands up against the tyranny of his government and finds salvation. The strong and dedicated cast (16 senior students) are ready to share this intense story with our Cowichan Valley neighbours and Brentwood students.
"The Crucible" will run April 16-18 at the T. Gil Bunch Centre for Performing Arts. Curtain 7:30 p.m.
