The original production of the play opened on Broadway in 1936. The play takes place in the home of the unconventional Sycamore family. At first, the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before you realise that if they are mad, then the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the wealthy, but unhappy, Kirbys. Tony, their attractive young son falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore house on the wrong evening. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby's reactions to the wild friends and family members of the Sycamores, reveal to Alice that marrying Tony is out of the question. The action of this madcap romantic comedy proceeds and the two young people eventually close the gap between their two diverse families.
