As Midterm Break began and many Brentwood students packed their bags to head home, 10 athletes from the Senior A Girls Volleyball team stayed behind to participate in their first playoff tournament of the year: North Islands. Brentwood and five other AA schools from north of Victoria participated in the tournament which was hosted by John Barsby Secondary in Nanaimo.

On Thursday, we traveled up island for two afternoon pool games. Our first game was against Brookes Westshore and we had a decisive two set victory. Afterwards, we played Highland Secondary in a close match that went to three sets, but despite their angry coach and loud parents, we won the match, qualifying for the semifinals on Friday.

With high spirits from our two wins, and a delicious dinner at the Cactus Club, we spent the night at the Long Lake Inn in Nanaimo. This was the first time this season we had traveled and stayed in a hotel as a team and the time spent off the court with one another was valued by everyone. “I feel like our team got closer because of the time we spent together,” remarked Julian W, Mackenzie ‘22. After a restful sleep in on Friday morning, we checked out and headed to breakfast before returning to John Barsby once more.

Our first game of the day was against Kwalikum Secondary and due to quite a few errors, we, unfortunately, lost the match. We did not get too discouraged by this loss because we had to play the bronze medal game right away. We faced off against Highland again for our last match of the tournament. We had already qualified for Islands, but wanted to break our past pattern of placing fourth and, instead, finish in the top three. The girls were highly motivated to defeat Highlands again and with a newly found surge of energy, beat them quite soundly in the first set. The second set was much closer with both teams alternating between the lead, but thanks in part to some excellent serving by Sam J, Mackenzie ‘23, Brentwood pushed ahead and won the second set a close 25-23, securing the bronze medal.

The girls now look ahead to Islands, which is set to take place at St Michaels University School in Victoria next weekend where we will play the top four teams from Victoria and the other top teams from North Islands. “I think we are all excited to take this much-needed break,” says Volleyball Captain and Athletic Prefect, Jocie L, Mackenzie ‘22, “and we are ready to work hard when we get back to prepare for Islands.”

Thanks for a great weekend team, enjoy your much deserved rest, and get ready for the next round of playoffs!
