Senior A Volleyball

This fall Brentwood’s Senior A Volleyball team rose to the challenge of filling in our missing pieces. With only four returning Grade 12s, our team was quickly formed during the first week of school as we brought in three new students and the Grade 11s.

Our first tournament at UBC was so early that some of us had never played together, but it helped form the building blocks to a strong team. Throughout the season, we went through many ups and downs, including injuries or watching ourselves dig deep into a game and not receiving the outcome we wanted. We improved, however, and were able to win North Islands and the Island Championships earning a berth to the Provincial Championships.

Going into Provincials, the last tournament of our season, we had high hopes of doing our best. We prepared ourselves the best we could with countless hours of training on the court. Though our results in provincials were not exactly what we wanted as a team, there is no doubt about the effort this team gave.

After playing for Brentwood for four years, I cannot believe this amazing journey is over. Pulling on my jersey for the last time was a hard thing to do. I have played with some of these girls for all four of these years, and even the new ones who joined this year are now like family.

We would not have gotten through this season if it hadn’t had been for our two amazing coaches, Mike Minckler and Jill Fougner: those two were our rocks. For the countless hours spent with us on and off the court, in order to make us into the players we are today, we cannot thank you enough. You two both made it easier to have a love for the game of volleyball; without your commitment it would not have been possible. From the seniors who will be leaving, we wish all of the returning girls the best of luck and another great season in 2017.
