Self Assessment of Core Competencies

7 May 2019
David McCarthy - Director of Learning
The new BC curriculum mandates that all schools include an element of reflection by the students in their end-of-year report cards. This year, as the new curriculum is phased in, you will see these reflections if you are a parent of a student in Grades 8, 9 or 10. The students will be asked to think about how they have developed in each of the 4 "core competencies" that the BC curriculum uses as a holistic measure of intellectual growth. The competencies are communication, thinking (both critical and creative), personal awareness, and social responsibility. They are woven into all aspects of the academic, co-curricular, and boarding programs at Brentwood and an attempt has been made by the Ministry of Education to quantify them using a series of "profiles" that illustrate where on a continuum a student might place themselves in terms of these attributes and skills. This is not intended to be something we use as a grading scheme, but rather a way of leveraging the students' own awareness of their development as learners. Research shows that having this bigger picture of their own development enhances a student's ownership of their learning and and helps them push towards higher levels of independence in the way they approach education. This metacognitive exercise is linked to goal setting and is an ongoing process that advisors and teachers are engaged in with their students over the course of the year. Students will also be asked to provide evidence of their learning that demonstrates growth in the core competencies.
