School Ski Day 1

1 February 2013

Alarms rang at 4:45am springing excited and exhausted Brentwood students awake for the upcoming busy day. A 5:15am breakfast awaits the groggy early risers to fuel them for the day. Five buses are briskly loaded and take off for the two-plus hour ride up to Mount Washington.

The bus ride is silent; skiers and boarders catch up on lost sleep.

Arriving at the hill, the busses are unloaded quickly in the hopes of hitting the slopes ASAP. The rental line is packed with enthusiastic and impatient kids. After all the anticipation, the ski day finally begins!

Hopping on the chairlift, Brentwood students talked and laughed with their friends as they debated which runs to shred first. Some ambitious and talented skiers and boarders camped out at the park and attempted jumps and rails, and the others with less experience stayed comfortable on the greens and blues. At the beginning of the day, most runs were pretty icy, but as the day went on, the sun shone and the ice melted. The weather was amazing and could not have been better for school ski day; it was sunny and warm all day with no threat of clouds or rain.

A brief break for lunch and sign-in took place between eleven and twelve-thirty, when students ate their packed lunch or indulged in burgers and poutine. The second half of the day consisted of more skiing and boarding and having tons of fun with friends. Five chairlifts served many exhilarating runs and different terrain. Students tried to make it to every one, skiing or boarding as many runs as possible.

At 3:00pm, skiers and boarders make their way back down the hill to take off boots, helmets, and outer layers and grab a famous Beaver Tail. A Beaver Tail is a deep fried pastry flattened and stretched to look like a beaver’s tail (we’re Canadian, eh!) and topped with your choice of delicious sweets. The line at the Beaver Tail cabin consisted mainly of Brentwood students trying to get their sugar fix before clambering on the bus and heading back to school.

Once all the snowboards and skis were stowed back on the bus and all students were accounted for, the bus started back on the road towards Brentwood. Only one stop is made for dinner, where students are given the option of whatever is nearest the parking lot the bus stopped at. This usually included McDonalds, Starbucks, grocery stores, etc.

The bus ride back to school is much louder with students excitedly sharing stories of their day, whether it was conquering the highest jump in the park, or making it down the easiest run. No matter what the story, all students had an awesome time on the mountain with their friends.

Many thanks to Mr. Flynn and Mrs. Mays who, once again, organized the event and to all of the faculty and staff supervisors who made the trip possible.

Who wouldn’t want to miss school to ski for the day?
