The Senior Boys Soccer team ventured over to neighbouring Salt Spring  Island this last Tuesday. With six wins in their first six games, and a first place trophy from the ISA championships - a tournament for all of the independent schools in the province - the team headed into the match with high expectations.

It was a gloomy and rainy afternoon when the team got off of the Crofton-Vesuvius ferry and made their way to the field in Ganges. Center-back and Head Prefect Jacob H, Privett ‘22 greeted all of his friends and family who were out to watch him play. Jacob is one of Brentwood’s students who comes from Salt Spring Island, and, when having to compete against his childhood friends, said that he “felt like [he] was betraying [his] hometown yet at the same time wanted to crush them”.

Ten minutes into the match, the score was still 0-0 when a long pass was played over the Salt Spring  defence to the Brentwood star forward Youki A, Whittall ‘23. With both Youki and the Saltspring goalkeeper focused on the ball, they collided at the top of the 18 yard box and Youki went down hard. He was carried off of the field after the scary incident and now awaits an MRI scan for a potential MCL injury on his right knee.

The game remained 0-0 until the half, as Brentwood was clearly missing Youki’s presence. However, shortly after the second half began, Oscar L, Ellis ‘23 opened up the scoring with a composed finish from a tight angle. This comfort did not last for long though as Salt Spring  quickly responded with a goal of their own, coming from a rebounded shot.

The game continued to intensify as the final whistle approached. Then, with mere minutes remaining, Avik B, Privett ‘23 won a free kick in the opposing team’s half. The crowd began to realize that this might be the last chance of the game. Thomas M, Privett ‘23 stepped up to take the freekick, as focused as a cat, watching its prey in the long grass and waiting to attack. Nobody says it better than Tommy himself, “For a second, I thought back to the famous England freekick goal in 2001 and the legendary commentary: ‘Beckham could raise the roof here with a goal’. I noticed the keeper was off his line so I went for goal and hit the ball with my instep. The ball curled over the goalie and I knew it was in from the moment I hit it.”

The game finished 2-1 and Brentwood extended their winning streak to an impressive seven games. Thomas may have scored the goal of the season, but there is still a long way to go. The team has some high goals set for the remainder of the season, and with such a promising group they will be very interesting to watch as the season goes on.
