Salt Spring Rescheduled

3 October 2011

Only a week ago, a group of intrepid Outdoor Pursuits youth and seasoned adults, led by Mr. Norman, set out to accomplish a task. It was no ordinary task, mind you, but one requiring weeks of preparation and training.  We set out to circumnavigate Salt Spring Island in 5 days, and while we did not accomplish that task, we certainly had a blast trying.

We set out on Saturday afternoon, with great weather and high hopes.  After an afternoon of easy paddling, we arrived at our first campsite on Portland Island, an hour’s paddle off of Salt Spring.  After an amazing dinner of flame grilled chicken and vegetables, we settled in for the night dreaming of another day of great weather.

Our hopes we dashed however, when we awoke to high winds and rough seas.  After listening to the forecast, we learned of a break in the rough conditions, and quickly packed our kayaks.  After a brief hike along the shore, the wind had settled, and we paddled across to Salt Spring, where we would find shelter and road access should the need arise.

Unfortunately, with the forecast looking grim, and had already lost two days of paddling and we were forced to cancel the trip. Slightly dejected, we packed up our gear and waited for the bus that would take us back to the reality, safety, and warm beds of school.

Looking back on the trip from the warmth and security of my dorm room, I realize now that although it might not have been a popular decision at the time, shortening the trip was the right one, and even though we did not accomplish our goal, the trip will still go down as one of my most fun and memorable experiences at Brentwood.
