Rugby girls win medals this summer

28 August 2008

While the rest of us have been enjoying a warm restful summer, a number of our girls rugby team have been training hard with various rep rugby teams. All of them competed well and earned medals in their competitions. In early July, Lenutsa Reid and Denise Cheung won starting spots on the Island U-19 team (the Crimson Tide), coached by Brentonians Tim Van Vliet and Marlee Hahn. The team competed in a BC championship against other regional teams and finished third.
Later in July, Sarah Barber and Meredyth Cole won places on the Island U-17 sevens team for the BC games held in the Okanagan. Unfortunately, the day before leaving, Meredyth injured her foot and could not compete. Sarah and her team-mates, coached by Brad and Alana Skene from Cowichan SS, dominated the competition and won the gold medal playing some superb rugby. As Sarah played in the forwards in most games, it was a considerable learning experience for her.
Finally, Mie Maxwell-Smith spent the entire summer training with the BC U-17 team and played in the National Youth Rugby Festival held in Ottawa last week. She tells me she was chosen to start at prop and had a wonderful time with a remarkable group of young women. They played some very good rugby and found stiff competition from both Alberta and Ontario. They won their semi-final against Alberta in sudden-death overtime and lost the final 8-10 in the dying moments. A wonderful achievement for a player in her first year in the sport. We congratulate them all for their courage and commitment to their goals as athletes.
