Rugby: Girls win Brentwood's first Provincial AA title

25 May 2009

This past week, the girls rugby team had an adventurous trip to Williams Lake for the BC Provincial Championship. On the way they drove through sleet and snow and trained in hail once they arrived, although the actual games were all played in warm sunshine. On the first day, the girls won their pool beating Smithers 21-7 and North Kamloops 27-0. On Friday they met Robert Bateman from Abbotsford in the semi-final and played superbly beating a good team 39-3. Everyone played in all three games showing that they could all compete at this high level. In the final, the match with Clayton Heights was a gritty classic; not a place for the faint of heart! Dani put us ahead after about 15 minutes, but thereafter the game flowed back and forth with nobody giving an inch. Our defence disrupted their pick-and-go style, but their pressure forced us into errors, too. Late in the game from our own 22, two mis-passes sent Dani off again to give us a 14-0 lead. Clayton scored a try in the dying moments and deservedly so. It was a memorable win by a team superbly led by outstanding senior players who performed with grit and poise in the heat of battle. As coaches we feel privileged to have been able to work with such a remarkable group of young women. A memorable week in Brentwood sports history!
