Rugby: girls score impressive win over Shawnigan Lake School

On Tuesday, the girls rugby team, watched by many students and parents, scored an impressive win over Shawnigan Lake School on Gillespie Field. From the opening whistle, they moved the ball about the field quickly and supported one another with a great deal of enthusiasm. The speed of the outside backs was put to good use in the first few minutes as Dani Robb was sprung free by some well-timed passes and raced 75m to score under the posts. Sarah Barber also scored her first try as a flanker after the ball had passed through at least eight pairs of hands in a long movement up the right wing. Despite their inexperience, the Shawnigan team played hard and tackled strongly, forcing the Brentwood girls to work hard for their points. The forwards rucked and scrummed effectively controlling much of the first and second phase ball although Shawnigan made the lineouts a very competitive area. The girls have good reason to pleased with this win, but it is early in the season and we have many areas in which to improve.
