Ross Cup Face-Off

26 February 2022

For the first time since 2020, the Brentwood Hockey program is hosting their annual tournament at Kerry Park, the Ross Cup. Schools and teams including Shawnigan, Kelsey, Cowichan and Brentwood go face to face in a battle for the Cup.

Brentwood brought four teams to the tournament, two junior teams, our female team, and our Senior Boys squad.

Since there is still this thing around called COVID, there has been a decrease in the number of games this year due to travel restrictions and safety for the players and coaches. For our Grade 12 students, the Ross Cup is the last time they will skate over the blue line with a B proudly on their jersey.

The Senior Boy’s Captain, Trekker J, Ellis ‘22, has this to say after the first day of the tournament: “This year has been full of ups and downs in terms of COVID and our ability to travel. However, as we head into the Ross Cup undefeated, the buzz surrounding this team is amazing and we hope to go out with a splash. A huge thanks goes out to the coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes who is making this tournament possible.”

Since spectators are finally allowed in the Kerry Park arena, it is safe to say that the loud and energetic atmosphere increased the spirit and passion in the rink. Having fans in the barn gives the game a sense of reality and our players, including Emily P, Mack ‘22, feels “supported by the cheering and positive ambiance.”

On Thursday evening, the girl’s team played their rivals, Shawnigan, and came out on top with a final score of 9-5, including a hat trick from Blair M, Alex ‘24. The MVP for this big game was awarded to their star goalie, Emma P, Alex ‘24 for her massive saves in the crease. The improvement this team has shown is extremely impressive and the players are all congratulated on their efforts and determination.

The girl’s Assistant Captain, Amber W, Alex ‘22 says, “I am so proud of how much improvement the girls have made this season and I’ll miss playing with them next year.”

Directly following the girl’s Showcase game on Thursday, the Senior Boys took on Shawnigan for the long-awaited, fierce battle known as their Showcase game. The stands were packed with Shawnigan students and parents wearing yellow on one side and Brentwood students and parents wearing red on the other. With goals from Tyler A, Rogers ‘22 and Assistant Captain, Will P, Whittall ‘22, the boys were able to climb to the top of the scoreboard after Shawnigan drew first blood early on. Stay tuned for Will’s article which provides a deeper look inside the Varsity Showcase game.

I would like to thank the Kerry Park Recreation Centre for hosting us from Thursday through Saturday; we appreciate all your hard work. Another thank you goes out to all the players, coaches, and fans who helped create a fun and positive environment for everyone to enjoy. I look forward to seeing the final results of the tournament later today.

See you next year, Ross Cup!
