Rise and Grind

Every Saturday morning, as most of the Brentwood community recharges from an exhausting Brentwook week, a small group of individuals are on the ice or in the gym, grinding. It’s not like they have much of a choice, but the Ice Hockey team and their Saturday morning ritual is a sight to behold.

Due to difficulty finding ice times on Saturday afternoons, the hockey coaches came up with an innovative idea: why not play in the morning? Despite the collective groaning of many players, Saturday morning hockey has evolved into a welcome opportunity to get active in the morning and enjoy a free, uninterrupted Saturday afternoon as the rest of the school takes part in their usual sport.

To make getting up at 6:00 am on what is supposed to be a sleep-in day even more enticing, rather than a traditional practice, a series of inter-squad games was set up to raise the stakes. This not only gives the sleepy players some incentive to wake themselves up at the crack of dawn, but it also helps get the team up to game speed as the competitive season quickly approaches. Veteran of the program Taiyo T, Whittall ‘23 knows how important this is: “It’s sometimes hard to get up that early in the morning but we all know how beneficial it is and we all want to improve.”

On “special occasions,” such as this past weekend, when TEDx restricted the possibility of getting on the ice in the morning, the players were treated to a workout. If you’ve ever seen Mr Robinson or Mr Shadlock in the gym, you would know why the thought of a workout run by them sends shivers down the team’s collective spine. They’re monsters. Although we don’t like to admit it, we know how good it is for us and that it is exactly what we need to be in prime condition for the competitive season. Mr Robinson put it best: “Hard work pays off.”

Speaking of the competitive season, games are right around the corner for this team so stay tuned for what should be a great year for a program loaded with talent.
