Regional Debate Success

4 February 2017

On January 28th, twenty-six eager Brentwood debaters travelled to Victoria to compete at the Regional Debate Tournament. The fifteen teams, accompanied by their coaches and volunteer judges, arrived at GNS at 8am.  All junior and senior teams analyzed and challenged the prepared rounds in the morning. Teams argued both sides of the resolution: that the priority of the criminal justice system should be rehabilitation not retribution. After a few hours of intense debate, the teams gathered again, awaiting the first impromptu topic to be released. For both impromptu rounds, a mere twenty minutes of preparation time were allotted. All novice, junior and senior teams faced some thought-provoking resolutions. After countless speeches, cross-examinations, and points of information (POIs) were delivered, the final of four rounds of debate had concluded. Out of the fifteen Brentwood teams that competed, five qualified for Provincials in March. Torren K & Lulu J came in 5th place, Maya J & Mark Y came 4th, and Liam P & Jemma O placed 3rd in the junior category. In the senior division, Delaney B & David M placed 2nd, and Kavi G & Afyz M came in first place. Three senior Brentwood debaters also placed as top individual speakers. Delaney B came 3rd, David M was 2nd, and Kavi G received first place. We wish all debaters going to Vancouver to compete at Provincials good luck!  Jemma O, Mackenzie ‘18
