Reflecting on Our Brentwood Journey with Capstone

If you (or your parents) are anything like my mom, I’m sure you are just as confused as to what this whole “Capstone” project is as she was when I told her about it. The project is different at all schools, but at Brentwood, Capstone is essentially a way to give us students the opportunity to tell our story; how we ended up at Brentwood, our passions, accomplishments, and what we plan on doing after graduation.

The projects could be done in any fashion, but most students chose to present in the form of Google slides or Google sites. I used Google sites and separated the presentation into the four main sections that I stated earlier: how I got to Brentwood, my passions (where I talked about hockey, chess, my writing, and the gym), my work experience, my plan to attend UVIC, and what I hope to accomplish afterward.

In my opinion, the best part of the Capstone project is the presentation itself; having the ability to actually sit down and talk with our advisors about our goals in life, and both listening to their feedback and enjoying a fairly casual conversation about our interests. When I asked my friend Brenna LK, Alex ‘21 how she enjoyed the project, she said “It was an interesting experience. We are given a lot of freedom to talk about whatever we want, and I wish we had more projects like this earlier in our high school career. It allowed me to showcase my life in relation to academics, personal and social achievements, and personal passions. As someone who enjoys verbal presentations, I was able to pursue a goal with Capstone that I enjoyed while also creating a website that I can use in the future.”

While creating the presentation, I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of time it gave me to reflect on the things I enjoyed. Josh L, Whittall ‘21 had a similar experience, stating that “No one has ever asked me to tell them what I am passionate about before. It was fun being able to reflect on those experiences and truly dissect my interests and achievements.”

All-in-all, the Capstone experience is one I am sure many students will remember, and an engaging way to conclude the year, giving us time to reflect on our learning and Brentwood journey. This is an exciting time for all graduating students, and the Capstone is only the first “cap” we’ll be experiencing before graduation.
