Redefining Education - A 13 year Old’s Take
Like many of you, my friends and colleagues regularly email me must-see information: links, articles, and videos. They are “This is so cool that I need to share it with everyone” type people. Fiona Dalrymple, one of our science teachers, recently shared a link to thirteen-year-old Logan LaPlante’s TEDx video. His message of education’s role in creating happy, productive citizens is inspiring. Dr. Roger Walsh’s eight keys to human happiness and productivity helped shaped this young man's perspective. They are:
- Diet & Nutrition
- Time in Nature
- Contribution & Service
- Relaxation & Stress Management
- Religion & Spirituality
Logan’s provocative assertion is that all schools should be measured against these eight factors – these should, therefore, be our KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators).
So how is Brentwood doing?
In my discussions with current students and Old Brentonians, they constantly reinforce that, while not perfect, our school measures up quite well. We believe that the magical combination of our tripartite programme and boarding structure reinforces Walsh’s eight keys. Exercise, recreation, time in nature, and relaxation are continuously being met in our academic, athletic, and artistic programmes. Spirituality, contribution, service, and nutrition are evident in all aspects of our boarding life programme. The final and, Walsh argues, most important factors of happiness and productivity are deep and meaningful relationships. This, I believe, is where our score goes to the highest percentile.
Students, faculty, and staff are incredibly committed to each other. From day one, new students are absorbed into our Brentwood family and quickly understand that they do not have to mask their real selves – rather, they are confident to be their best selves.
As a school that is committed to continuous improvement, I invite you, as parents, to provide feedback on how we are performing along these eight criteria.
We look forward to hearing from you.
De Manu In Manum,
Head of School
