Putting the B in B-Well

Mental health and community involvement have become quite the buzzwords of the past decade. Brentwood is no exception to the adoption of these values, and has strived to recognize the huge importance of student/staff mental health and giving back to our local community.

Brentwood’s Wellness and Service Club, B-Well, is the student-run organization that aims to spearhead these initiatives on our campus and within our community. Composed of over 70 Grade 12, certified Student Peer Assistant Resource Councillors, with even more Grade 11s in training, this club has received huge support and interest from students and staff alike.

At the heart of this operation, 16 representatives, two from each boarding house, are led by B-Well Captain, Dylan K, Rogers ‘21 and our kind-hearted staff sponsor, Ms Murray. While staying 6-feet apart, this group has grown together through working collaboratively to improve student and community wellbeing.

Due to the incredible enthusiasm and commitment of these individuals, even while limited by certain challenges presented by COVID-19 regulations, B-Well has successfully put on several events and volunteer opportunities. A few highlights include healthy relationship discussions, Mental Health Awareness Day for the Grade 11s, and the Cyber Buddies online companionship and tutoring program - all in the first term of the academic year.

Noel P, Whittall ‘21 says “I applied to be a B-Well rep because I know high school can be a stressful environment for lots of people and I think it’s very important to check in with those who are overwhelmed. It also is really fun to organize school-wide events and to volunteer for wellness activities”. These meaningful events are completely reliant on student leadership and participation, so it is great that each B-Well member recognizes and models what B-Well stands for.

Not only do these initiatives make a huge impact on student life as a whole, but representatives within the club gain meaningful connections and great life experience as student and community leaders. My involvement has provided me with far greater personal and social awareness and interpersonal skills that I will carry with me for years to come.

Thanks to the amazing Ms Murray, Dylan, all the members of B-Well, and the hugely supportive Brentwood community, B-Well is successful in improving the lives of countless students and community members. Jess T, Alex ‘21 summarized, “Being a B-Well rep is one of my favorite parts of attending Brentwood. It’s an amazing program that really helps students feel supported”.
