Project Innovation 2009

24 September 2009

On Friday, September 18th our sixth annual Project Innovation began. Seven teams of Grade 11 and 12 students dived into the adventures of entrepreneurship, feet first. Each team of 3 - 5 students has started a business selling a product of their choice to any willing consumer. After faculty members provided certain guidelines, the teams were left to their own devices. Financing for these businesses is very limited--each team member can only contribute $5 and teams are prohibited from raising capital elsewhere. During the course of this two-week project, students will be faced with everyday business problems including: unanticipated challenges, human resources issues, resource management, and the intricacies of team dynamics.
Previous businesses have sold a variety of products such as hot dogs, t-shirts, and smoothies--Project Innovation's most successful business to date had a net profit of $690, raised by selling greeting cards and calendars that featured student photography. The project ends on October 3rd when student teams will do a presentation for a board of investors from outside the school community.
