Privett Spike

Privett House has always been a very athletic house, dominating the boys’ interhouse athletic competitions. Over the last few years a new outdoor field game has become popular with the boys of Privett. This game is Spikeball, the ultimate test of hand-eye coordination, reaction speed, and athleticism.

Spikeball is played with two teams of two around a circular net which is stretched on a ring about a foot above the ground. The goal of the game is to hit the ball into the net so that the other team is not able to return it. Spikeball is like volleyball when it comes to the rules. You can only hit the ball with your hands once before passing it to your teammate and you only have three passes before you have to hit it onto the net.

This game has started to be played religiously throughout Privett and Brentwood. I have watched many Privett boys playing spikeball on the field for hours on end, rain or shine. When I asked Ian VL, Privett ‘21 about spikeball he said “I first played it back home in Park City, Utah and loved it. This year I have been playing quite a bit ever since I got myself my own spikeball set.” Ian also mentioned how he is usually out trying to play spikeball every day and how it is “such a great sport”.

Spikeball has started to get better known around the world - it is even aired on ESPN. Ms McLean, our Head of Interhouse events, noticed how much Brentwood likes spikeball and this year we will have our first spikeball interhouse competition. This is very good news for Privett as we are in a tight race for the interhouse championship against Mack/Ellis. Hanno F, Privett ‘21 and Co-Interhouse Captain says “It's good they added spikeball to the list of interhouse competitions this year as I believe Hope/Privett will dominate the sport and bring in points for the championship.” Interhouse Spikeball is today, Saturday, May 14th, and Privett House is very excited.
