Prince George Hockey Series 2010

“Why Prince George? What brings you to Prince George?” These were the questions of the week last Wednesday through Sunday when a keen, enthusiastic group of 17 male and three female Brentwood hockey players travelled north to Prince George for a four -day series. The rationale behind the trip was to visit a different part of this beautiful province, and thereby enhance the hockey experience; extra time on the ice is always a treat! The Brentwood club played four games in four days, earning a respectable record of two wins and two losses as they faced some of the most competitive high school teams in the city. The Brentwood team played two games against Prince George Senior Secondary School, a team that can claim bragging rights to already having one player drafted into the Western Hockey League. Our team also played against Duchess Park and Kelly Road, two other local high schools. Friends and family of present Brentwood students, Old Brentonians, Deputy Head of School, John Allpress and area residents were treated to fast-paced play, fine athleticism, and admirable sportsmanship. Highlights of the series included travelling in a team bus equipped with a flat screen TV and tables, playing in the CN Centre (a rink similar to Victoria’s Save on Foods Centre), tremendous press coverage, over 220 minutes of hockey, a Prince George Cougars vs. Vancouver Giants game, crazy Cosmic bowling, meeting Brentwood Alumni and having plain good fun. On the ice, in the stands, and around the town, it is obvious that hockey in Prince George is a way of life. The Brentwood players and coaches were fortunate to be part of this passionate tradition, despite the brevity of the visit. Our thanks and appreciation go out to the families and friends who were gracious supporters and hosts, in particular Barb and Greg Pocock, and Dr. Shona Penhale and her husband, Bob. From the team, a special “thank you” is extended to coaches Mike Flynn and Wes Plater.
